The Museum of Drawings

The Museum of Drawings (Teckningsmuseet) is the only museum in the Nordic region dedicated to drawing as an art form. Here, you can explore exhibitions featuring both Nordic and international artists, as well as works from our own collection. The museum aims to highlight both contemporary trends and historical perspectives. Our public activities also include workshops, lectures, concerts, and educational programs for schools.

Opening hours

The museum is open Monday to Sunday and has free admission. A few weeks a year, we are closed due to exhibition changes. See opening hours. (Monday to Friday: 10 AM–4:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday: 12 PM–4 PM.)

The Drawing studio

In the drawing studio downstairs, art materials are available for both children and adults! Create freely or use our image-based instructions, which are thematically linked to the exhibitions. On certain weekends and holidays, an artist is present to lead the educational activities.

Lena Furberg, 13 June–13 September 2026

Lena Furberg (born 1957 in Skellefteå) is a Swedish artist and illustrator, widely known for her vivid and richly detailed depictions of horses. Her artistic practice combines technical mastery with a deep understanding of animal movement and expression, and she is regarded today as one of the world’s foremost horse illustrators. Furberg is best known for the comic series about the pony Mulle, published in the Swedish magazine Min Häst (My Horse), which has made generations of young readers both laugh and recognize themselves.

Furberg’s visual world moves between humour and realism, between everyday life and fantasy. Her drawings reveal a genuine love of animals and nature, as well as a strong sense of storytelling. In addition to her well-known horse series, she has created illustrations for books, posters and magazines.

For more than five decades, Lena Furberg has inspired both readers and fellow artists with her craftsmanship and her unique ability to capture the essence of horses. Her work has become an integral part of Sweden’s visual heritage – a blend of everyday joy, skilled craftsmanship and quiet humour that continues to fascinate new generations.

Animals from the collection, 13 June–13 September 2026

In this exhibition, we present a selection of the countless animal drawings found in the museum’s collection. Humans have always felt a sense of kinship with animals, while at the same time, throughout history, we have also sought to draw a boundary between the human and the animal. As early as antiquity, humans began to be described as “the thinking animal,” an idea that was later developed in European philosophy into the notion of humans as “the rational animal.” According to the major monotheistic religions, animals were created first and humans last – as the pinnacle of creation.

Humanity’s fascination with depicting animals stretches from cave paintings, through fables, fairy tales, and art history, to today’s animated films, where the main characters are often anthropomorphic (human-like) animals. The Latin word anima, meaning soul or life force, has given rise to both animal and animation. In many ways, we owe animals our survival and way of life: as food, warmth, labour, materials, and companionship.

The role of animals in human life is as multifaceted as it is existential. We have therefore chosen to divide the exhibition into the following categories: wild animals, domestic animals, humans and animals, free interpretations of animals, satire, and illustration.
