The Museum of Drawings

The Museum of Drawings (Teckningsmuseet) is the only museum in the Nordic region dedicated to drawing as an art form. Here, you can explore exhibitions featuring both Nordic and international artists, as well as works from our own collection. The museum aims to highlight both contemporary trends and historical perspectives. Our public activities also include workshops, lectures, concerts, and educational programs for schools.

Opening hours

The museum is open Monday to Sunday and has free admission. A few weeks a year, we are closed due to exhibition changes. See opening hours. (Monday to Friday: 10 AM–4:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday: 12 PM–4 PM.)

The Drawing studio

In the drawing studio downstairs, art materials are available for both children and adults! Create freely or use our image-based instructions, which are thematically linked to the exhibitions. On certain weekends and holidays, an artist is present to lead the educational activities.

Amy Simon – From Where I Stand

Amy Simon (b. 1957 in New York) is an artist with 40 years of practice encompassing drawing, sculpture, photography, and film, with drawing at its core. Her process begins intuitively: a concept is translated into two dimensions, where meaning emerges through repetition, accumulation, and sustained looking. Rather than illustrating a predetermined idea, the work develops through making, allowing meaning to reveal itself. Even when a proposition moves into another medium, it remains rooted in its original drawn language.

Simon’s practice is grounded in an ongoing investigation of belonging—of what it means to locate oneself in relation to home, immigration, gender, place, and identity. The gaze moves between individuals and the spaces they inhabit, questioning how identity is formed both from within and through the perceptions of others.

From Where I Stand marks a significant shift, placing Simon herself at the center of the inquiry. In the Io series—Io meaning “I” in Italian—the artist proposes an encounter with an unknown figure occupying the space before us. By withholding markers of age and gender, Simon disrupts the instinct to categorize and judge. What remains is the possibility of encountering the figure through one’s own experience: a meeting between self and unfamiliar other. As the series develops, the figure gradually gives way to the surrounding environment. Landscape becomes an extension of consciousness, through which questions of presence, belonging, displacement, and perspective unfold.

For Simon, place is inseparable from identity. As an American, living in Sweden for over 30 years, she furthers the examination of displacement and belonging. Her work is held in public collections including Moderna Museet and Malmö Börshus and has been extensively exhibited internationally, including at the 2009 Venice Biennale, Making Worlds. Across media, her practice returns to a central proposition: we are distinct from one another, yet continually shaped by shared experiences of place, perception, and presence.

Physicality – Drawings from the Collection

In this exhibition, works from the museum's collection are presented, created using a variety of techniques and reflecting different artistic expressions and approaches. What these images share is their depiction of organic softness, physical presence, and a sense of corporeality and physicality. Volumes, forms, and figures have been given two-dimensional expression on paper. The drawings portray things that can be touched, that possess weight, volume, and spatial extension, rendered either through careful shading or with only a few distinct lines.

Some of the drawings are portraits and depictions of the human body, closely connected to our experience of embodiment. Others are abstract in character, where physicality is expressed through free forms and volumes endowed with a sculptural and emotional presence. We may perceive abstract shapes almost as living physical beings, while at the same time seeing the human body as a construction of volumes and directions. Together, the drawings reveal the paradox of bodies and volumes taking shape on flat sheets of paper – something that we, as physical beings with an impulse to describe our threedimensional world, may intuitively understand.
